In all my Bibles it says the Lord God, so this is the first evidence of who is speaking. Nowhere in Scripture is anyone other than Yahweh, our Father, referred to as the Lord God. Even when Yeshua/Jesus is referred to as Lord, the title God is never attached. The Lord God or the LORD, is in fact a replacement for the name YHWH or Yahweh. In this writing and most others I will refer to God as Yahweh, and Jesus as Yeshua. I call Yahweh by his name because that is His name. It is personal and intimate. I call Jesus Yeshua because it is the name he would have heard himself called when he walked this planet, so while it is fine to say Jesus, I just prefer Yeshua. It sounds better to me as well. So let’s get into it.
In Chapter 1 verses 4-6 we read…
4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before His throne, 5 and from Yeshua the Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, the ruler of kings on Earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
It is first clear here that there are three entities, if we count the seven spirits as one Holy Spirit, and I’m willing to accept that concept. So first we have HIM WHO WAS AND WHO IS AND WHO IS TO COME. This is clearly Yahweh, as this person is mentioned first and as we read on there is no mention of God by either title or name. Second we have the Seven Spirits before His throne. This is the Holy Spirit, represented as seven for perfection’s sake. Thirdly we have Christ, Yeshua, king of kings, firstborn of the dead, the faithful witness. Digging deeper we see that in verse 8, the person speaking calls Himself THE ONE WHO IS AND WHO WAS AND WHO IS TO COME, which is the only descriptor of Yahweh in verses 4-6. So this plainly tells us that the Father is speaking here, and because this is true in these verses, we can carry this understanding into all subsequent verses where THE ONE WHO IS AND WHO WAS AND WHO IS TO COME is mentioned. Then we can note that the Seven Spirits are before this person’s throne, and that is important to remember as we read further and get into chapter 4. So up until verse nine, Yeshua has not spoken. But let’s move past the first 8 verses and see how Yeshua is described…
In chapter 1:10-11 we read…
I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet 11 saying “Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches…”
It goes on to list these churches but their names are irrelevant to our point. In verse twelve John turns to see the voice speaking to him. He sees seven lamp stands(golden) and in their midst one like a son of man. He is clothed in a long white robe with a golden sash across his chest, hair which is white like wool or snow, eyes like fire and feet like burnished bronze, his voice like the roar of many waters. He is holding seven stars in his right hand, a two-edged sword is coming from his mouth and his face shone like the sun in full strength.
Now I want to jump to chapter four and we’ll read the description of another voice…
After everything Yeshua tells John he sees a door standing open in Heaven. The first voice which had spoken says “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” Now let’s read what he sees…
Chapter 4:2-3 At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in Heaven, with One seated on the throne. 3 And He who sat there had an appearance of jasper and carnelian and around the throne was a rainbow that had the appearance of an emerald. So the description of the One on the throne is vastly different than that of Yeshua. Whereas Yeshua is given a human portrayal, the One on the throne in Heaven is not described as looking like anything human, animal or any other being we might recognize. The One on the throne in Heaven is something different altogether. Holy. Set apart.
If we skip ahead to chapter 5:1-5 we see that Yahweh is holding a scroll which no one in Heaven or on Earth is worthy to open. But wait! One of the elders says that there is one worthy, the lion of Judah, root of David, has conquered and he can open the scroll and it’s seven seals. In 5:6-8 we see that between the throne and the four living creatures and among the twenty-four elders there is a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent into all the Earth. This Lamb takes the scroll from the right hand of the One seated on the throne. At this point the twenty-four elders fall down and sing a new song. So very clearly Yahweh is the One upon the throne and Yeshua is the Lamb between the throne and the four living creatures.
Going back to chapter 4:4-8 we are given a description of things and entities surrounding Yahweh’s throne. From the twenty-four elder’s thrones to the four living creatures, one lion-like, one ox-like, one human-like and one eagle-like. These four creatures are forever saying “Holy, holy, holy is the Lors God Almighty, who was and is and is to come.” We know from 4:3 that Yahweh is appearing as jasper and carnelian, and 5:6 that Yeshua is between the throne and the four living creatures, that he is described as a slain lamb. So Yahweh is on the throne being called THE ONE WHO IS AND WHO WAS AND WHO IS TO COME, backing up the idea that 1:8 is Yahweh and not Yeshua.
In chapter 4:9-11 we learn that whenever the four creatures give glory to the One on the throne, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him and worship. They cast their crowns of gold before the throne, saying, “Worthy are you, our LORD and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” So we’ve established that Yahweh is on the throne, Yeshua is beside the throne, and the Holy Spirit is before the throne. Which means that here the elders and the creatures are acknowledging Yahweh as the Creator.
Now in 5:6-9 we learn that the Lamb takes the scroll from the right hand of Yahweh, the One on the throne. Are we to believe that Yeshua took the scroll from his own hand? Or that Yeshua is not the Lamb? In some Christian songs they say that the Lamb is seated on the throne, yet the Bible does not teach this. Even if we say that Yeshua is upon the white throne of judgment mentioned later in chapter 20, which we will get to, this white throne is a separate throne from the throne of God. To say seated on the throne with no context is to equate the two. In essence equating Father and Son. This is heresy. Remember, Yahweh gave the ten commandments, His very first was THOU SHALT HAVE NO GODS BEFORE ME. When we worship Yeshua in Yahweh’s rightful place we are placing a god before Yahweh, the One who is and who was and who is to come. Just as a king’s messenger in the days of monarchs spoke with the full power and authority of that king, so Yeshua comes with the full power and authority of his Father and his God, Yahweh. The messenger was never mistaken for the king, yet it was understood that anything done to that messenger was in essence being done to that king, so everyone would treat the messenger as though he was the king, in order not to suffer the wrath of the king.
In 4:6-9 we get a new song sung by the elders once the Lamb is shown worthy to open the scroll… “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open it’s seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God, from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on Earth.” Even in this song they acknowledge Yahweh’s status above Yeshua when they say that he was slain and by his blood ransomed for God. Not for himself but for God. He has made us a kingdom and priests to our God. Not to himself. If we believe that the words used matter, (and of course they do because what is the point of language and definitions at all if they do not?) then we must take them for their meaning. There are far more Scriptures supporting Yeshua NOT being Yahweh/God/the Father than there are supporting that he is. The few that can be interpreted in that way are done so by a modern audience which does not have an ancient understanding. Though even in those days many misunderstood, the ones trying desperately to hold onto their traditions and positions. It is clear from the Scriptures that in the book of Revelation Yahweh is seated upon the throne, that Yeshua is before the throne and that the Holy Spirit is about the throne. Let’s add some more Scriptural evidence…
Just a few verses on we read another brief song which is very telling… Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing! These are all things which Yahweh, being eternal, first and last, beginning and ending, Alpha and Omega, already possesses. How can one receive what one already has? And if one can receive it, he must not already possess it, and if he does not already possess these things but must receive them, how then can he be the Eternal One? If the Lamb/Yeshua is receiving, only Yahweh can be delivering. And again only one verse later in 5:13 we read that every creature in Heaven and under the Earth and in the sea is saying…. To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb…. clearly showing that there is One on the throne and it is not the Lamb/Yeshua.
Continuing on in 6:12-17 there are described events of the future, when the Day of Wrath comes. Pretty much everything is destroyed and all the people of the Earth are crying out, to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb…” Again it is the One seated on the throne and the Lamb.
In 7:9-12 we learn about the great multitude from every nation, tribe, people and language standing before the throne and before the Lamb. Here one might misunderstand and assume that the Lamb is on the throne. He is not. Throughout Revelation so far the Lamb is always beside the throne, and this would cause them also to be before the Lamb as well. A little further on this is clarified when we read that this great multitude cries out, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” Again and again it is repeated, “AND TO THE LAMB”. There is God/Yahweh and there is the Lamb/Yeshua.
Chapter 11:15 states that when the seventh angel blows his trumpet,(this after all calamity and destruction and death takes place) loud voices in Heaven begin saying…. “The kingdom of the world has become the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ…” So again, One LORD(Yahweh) and His Christ(Yeshua). Very clearly separating the two into individual persons.
In 14:1 we see yet again how Yahweh and Yeshua are separate. I’m noting every Scripture in order to reiterate the fact that Scripture throughout the Bible is over and over very clear that Yeshua is not Yahweh, and that Yeshua is subservient to Yahweh in every aspect. So in 14:1 we read…. “Then I looked and behold, on Mount Zion stood the Lamb, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.” And this Scripture points out that there are two names written on their foreheads, Yeshua and Yahweh. Two names. Two individuals.
In 21:1-4 we are given a description of the new Heaven and Earth coming down, after the first Heaven and Earth had passed away, and the sea being no more. This new Heaven and Earth are a bride adorned for her husband. We understand that Yeshua is the husband, so the One preparing the bride must be separate from the husband, for no husband prepares his own bride.
In 21:5-8 He who is seated on the throne says, “Behold, I am making all things new. Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. 6 It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment. 7 The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” He is making all things new. Yahweh made all things. Many believe Yeshua/Jesus was not created, but Yeshua is the Son of God, and every son that ever existed was at some point created. He is called the Son of God because we are to understand that God existed first, that He made Yeshua to be His Son and that together they made everything that was made. Yeshua’s purpose was creation. Not because he was necessary for creation but as an example of the power of unity. Oneness. The possibilities available when two or more come together and truly work as one. Here He calls Himself Alpha and Omega, something that in all other instances we understand is Yahweh and not Yeshua. In chapter 7 He says that to the one who conquers He will be his God and he will be God’s son. Yeshua was clear throughout his teaching while on this Earth that Yahweh is our Father.
So in summary, in just this one book it is plainly laid out, Yahweh is our Father, Yeshua is our Savior, and the Holy Spirit is the force that guides us toward the Trinity, which is the fullness, completeness and perfection that is our God.
